The Spider's Secret: How Leaders Can Strengthen Their Web of Connections Network

Spiders are a common phobia, whether it’s because of their bite, unpredictable movements, or creepy appearance. For me, the most daunting attribute is the power of their webs.

Webs possess a combination of strength & stretchiness which not only draws in their desired prey, but also helps to resist damage from outside elements. So what the hell does this have to do with you?

What can emerging & global leaders learn from the astonishing spider web?

In my world, Almost-November has one meaning: Deal Season. We are in the moment in time where the work you put in over the next couple weeks will either make or break your year.

Is there anything Spookier than a full year coming down to the next three weeks?

Whether you are a B2B SaaS veteran, a retailer, a CPG marketer, or run a professional services firm, it is time to save yourself because no one is coming to save you.

The strength you've built already

Most of my career has been spent focused on building pipelines, creating partnerships, and closing deals. Although there are always KPIs and metrics associated with this, when you simplify it in its purest form, you are selling, building, and creating with another human.

Whether or not you are successful in closing, if you have done a good job, that person is now part of your "web".

Combine that with the various people at events or conferences you've met, with a sprinkle of your pre-existing friends & family... and voila you already have strength at your fingertips.

Understanding stretchiness

Many might feel strange about asking for help or tapping into their network to find creative ways to move their business forward.

I ask you: if you can't leverage these relationships for gain in some way, shape or form, are these relationships really actionable?

Network stretchiness involves using your network to gain insights into your customer profiles, your industry, asking your network to give you referrals to key executive leaders, or, in certain times straight up asking for the business.

Structuring the asks

Similar to a spider’s web, your network not only should bring prey (prospects/deals/partners/revenue) into your web, it also needs to protect you from damage.

You cannot go to your web and simply take. If you do, you risk severe damage.

To avoid any damage give back to your network through gifts, referrals back to them, offers to build content or webinars with them, cross promotion, or simply an IOU for the future can often suffice. There’s a lot you can do here.

What are some other creative ways to structure a give-and-take relationship when you are the only who really needs something? (Reply to this email and let me know)

Takeaways:

  1. You have strength in your network today. Identify who it is that can help you move the needle.

  1. Stretch your network. Once identified who & why,  do not be scared to tap in and make the ask.

  1. Prevent damage to the structure. Make sure it's a give & take relationship so you ensure longevity in your web.

A Masterclass in (re)-Branding by Jaunty

New York cannabis company, Naturae, has recently rebranded all of their products under one more recognizable umbrella: Jaunty.

Jaunty crafts THC products that appeal to everyone—from connoisseurs seeking ultra-premium items to the canna-curious exploring economically priced, approachable options. (Pro tip: their Strawberry Jam Solventless Live Rosin Gummies are fantastic)

As a GMP-certified 100% New York company working in cannabis extraction since 2017, Jaunty has been producing and distributing the finest solventless live rosin and distillate cannabis products in its mission to close the gap between flower and oil.

The rebrand comes for a few strategic reasons:

  • In a saturated market, building multiple brands no longer made sense.

  • Instead, focusing on their top-selling brand, which consumers already trust for premium quality, allows them to streamline their identity and presence.

  • Differentiation with a fun, lighthearted, and approachable brand helps them stand out in a highly regulated market.

Ready to experience the fun side of premium cannabis? Check out Jaunty’s products here.
