Subscriptions
I’m going to start today with a rant of questions.
This year what did you consume?
How did you consume it?
How much monthly or yearly did you pay for it?
Would you re-up or pay more?
Did the subscription deliver value?
What was the opportunity cost of subscribing to something?
Does the term have “subscription bloat” mean anything you you?
I took a deep look at my subscriptions this year. Between B2B tools to run my business like Hubspot, Quickbooks, Canva, PandaSign, and Google Suite and personal subscriptions like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney Plus, Broth & Hair cuts (more to come here), I realized three things:
1) Its hard as hell to manage all of these
2) Its hard to understand my “ROI” rom each subscription
3) These costs add up monthly and yearly and before you know it, your subscri-broke (haha get it, nice little pun for you)

So how can you get more value from subscriptions and understand how your consumers think?
2025 will be the year subscriptions get cancelled and deemed unnecessary. (Hot take)
As a leader, understanding your subscriptions for your team, for your personal development, for your overall well being is key to making you the most successful and financially viable version of yourself.
Step 1: Subscription audit: Before you can start to deduce your subscriptions value, you must understand where you are today and do an audit.
So what is a subscription? Technically, it is something you are “leasing” or “using up” over the course of a period of time.
It’s easy to sign up for a subscription. Before I knew it, I had over 17 subscriptions to various pieces that I was spending between 9.99-29.99/month.
Although I never want to to do the math on it, I only piece together how much I was spending and most importantly what I was using by putting them all on a spreadsheet. The results will shock you.
My suggestion is for you to do the same this holiday season.
Email me back, what did you find?

Step 2: Find out your best/favourite subscriptions
The subscriptions you use everyday, that deliver the most value for you, are ones that truly are inelastic.
Meaning if you are a Netflix or Spotify daily user, a 1$, 2$ or 3$ increase yearly won’t affect your renewal. But what about new ones? How do you decide?
At the beginning of the year, a subscription I invested in was “a haircut subscription”. One of the greatest decisions I've made in recent memory was to invest in a monthly subscription with my Barber Khris416.
It literally changed my life.
At the beginning, it was a financial decision. Each cut costs me 70$, vs an unlimited subscription was 200$.
My breakeven was 3 cuts & beard grooms month-very doable. I aimed to be in the chair 4-5 times/month to make sure I captured the value.
But still I had my doubts... it's a lot of money and in a must have vs nice to have economy, was it a must have?
Step 3: List out benefits that made those the best subscriptions
Added benefits of my haircut subscription over the 12 months:
It gave me a semblance of a routine.
My reflection and vision mapping increased. Each time in that chair, I took the time to meditate, reflect on the week that was and consider the one upcoming.
I felt at ease and prepared before big events. Whether emceeing, moderating, or hosting/throwing the event, a trim the day of allowed me to be present in the moment and focus on the task at hand while looking and feeling good
It helped build my mindset. Because my hair looked good, the rest of my internal and external perspective needed to match
I gained a new friend and a place where I could be authentically me without having to worry about anything.
Looking back, I didn't even really know how much I needed this and I’m glad I took this decision for myself.
Did you make any great investments for yourself in 2024?

You’re so welcome
Step 4: Relate them back to your business
How can products continue to deliver evolutionary value on their subscription?
Are you providing additionally benefits to your users that make them understand the value?
An important exercise here is talking to your customers, because they might have massive reasons that they’re subscribing that you don’t even know about.
Find your power users, and seek to understand the “out of the box benefits” that keep them coming back again and again. Be that subscription that they are happy to pay for. (My editor will die on the hill that he actually enjoys paying for Canva every month because the level of value is immense).
Find out what your subscribing to
Find out what your “inelastic subscriptions are”
Find out why you like them so much
Relate that back to your business and find out how you need to evolve with your customer to ensure you are providing consistent, evolutionary value so that your customer doesn’t drop your service, product or program?

🧘 Longevity
Gut health. It can seriously affect how I feel, especially when I’m low on energy or out of sync with my usual routine. This week, I dove into the connection between gut health and aging, and it made me realize how crucial it is. When your microbiome is balanced, it can be a total game changer for your body and mind.
We looked at how gut microbiota impacts longevity.
Here’s what stood out:
It’s More Than Just Digestion: A thriving gut doesn’t just break down food—it supports your immune system, reduces inflammation, and keeps your whole body in check.
Diversity Matters: The best gut health comes from variety. Load up on fiber, fermented foods, and probiotics to keep your gut bacteria diverse and balanced.
Gut Health Influences How We Age: A balanced microbiome can lower the risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline, helping you live longer and healthier.
Your Lifestyle Shapes Your Gut: What you eat, how often you move, and how you manage stress all impact your microbiome. Poor habits? They can throw things out of balance fast.
What about you? Are you paying attention to your gut health?

Next week we’re doing a holiday gift guide. Have a gift or product that would provide value to our readers? Let me know!
