Everyone always remembers the event they found their next partner at, the Soiree that helped them close the next deal, or the Gala that made them feel like they were the most special person in the world. Maybe it was just a quick stop in at the Transition Mixer.

Everyone, at some point in their life should throw an event, from soup to nuts, and here’s why.

Creating, building, selling, executing and marketing an event gives you so much, including the cure for all problems - a big JUICY pipeline

At this point in my life, I’ve thrown over 50 events. One of my first ever events was while I was running for Social Science Representative at Western University. (Did I win the nomination?

As a leader, brand builder, executive and entrepreneur, you need the skillset of building and throwing events in your tool belt.

After all, why would you go other events to do your prospecting/closing/enjoying... when you can just bring everyone to you? Here’s why this skillset is a lifelong tool that will benefit you in whatever realm you choose to operate in for the rest of your life.

Let’s break it down:

1) Research

You have to create something that brings perceived value. Before you can do that, you need understand your customer demographic, figure out what problem you intend to solve, and WHY it will get solved at your event.

Put this on a one page brief It’ll help conceptualize it and make the idea real

2) Profit and Loss (P&L Fluency)

You cannot seek to make any profit if you do not map out where your REVENUE is coming from, and what your EXPENSES will be.

I’ve come to realize the venue is always the biggest cost, but it’s also the biggest draw. It´s imperative you understand your venue costs, as well as venue spacing.

You’ll start to see how quickly your budget starts to dwindle and how ruthless you need to be with cutting out unneeded expenses (at the Inaugural KIND Winter Fair we may have gone a little overboard including a holographic waterfall.. but totally worth it iykyk)

KIND Winter Far, December 2021, Toronto

3) Branding & Design

Story telling and visualizing how the event should look & feel is one thing, designing a whole brand playbook & associated assets to support are different beast entirely. DO NOT underestimate the value of top tier design in your event planning. Luckily in the last few Polaris events, I had help from the wonderful folks @Designers & Coffee

The Ship of Theseus was one of my favorites this year because it made every single leader in that room think.  What many will not realize is the number of iterations it takes to land on the right creative, because every detail matters-an example below.

“If the parts of the ship change, but the structure/essence remain the same, is it the same ship? Similarly, are you the same leader?”

4) Marketing & Selling

  • Creating a deck

  • Building the right messaging for your desired audience

  • Putting together a sponsor list

  • Calling prospects & pitching.

This is where the science comes into play. Calculated, intentional, thoughtful, and clearly able to showcase why this event will bring everyone their own definition of “ROI”.

5) Onboarding

  • Making sure the partners/sponsors understand every detail of what’s needed from them (and you of course)

    • This ensures they show up in the most opportune way, and in line with the experience you are trying to cultivate.

  • Making sure your audience knows what’s needed of them (FAQ, i.e. don’t bring dogs, don’t consume alcohol, dress to impress etc).

    • This is more tedious than you think because of how much needs to be communicated, and how little people actually absorb.

      Simplicity is sophistication-Steve Jobs

 6) Operational Execution

It’s great to plan but what’s the form of communication between the team on the day of? How do you ensure the event runs so smoothly and all the boxes are checked?

Marketing asset management, agency management, venue management etc...these are all big pieces of the pie and key to expense management.

Gut Check: How does the Event Feel? Are you having fun or are you stressed out.

The most fun I´ve ever had have been at the events I´ve had a hand in throwing

7) Feedback (Finally)

Create a survey to ensure you hit the mark, your sponsors got what they needed, your customers got what they needed and that you have longevity. Only then can you seek to scale.

This is why I love building and throwing events. It forces you to work every muscle of running a business.

If you remember nothing else from today or for some reason forgot everything you just read:

1) Events force you to build and refine your skillsets
2) Create moments for people and they´ll never forget it
3) It will never be perfect, so you may as well have fun
